Beat the Heat With (Healthy) Frozen Treats!

PopsiclesAlthough summer is not quite upon us, the weather certainly is! When it’s hot outside, nothing sounds better than a frozen treat to quench thirst and cravings for something sweet. However, if you’re used to eating healthy, (or at least, trying to,) summertime can make this difficult as your first instinct might be to make a trip to the local ice cream parlor, or request a frozen delectable from your favorite coffee shop. And if you have kids, it can practically seem like a crime to deny them a cold treat on a hot summer day. Luckily, you don’t have to deny yourself or your kids the satisfaction of a tasty, frozen treat on a hot summer day without sacrificing healthy choices. In fact, you can whip up some very healthy frozen delectables in as little as five minutes! (Give or take some freezing time!) The following recipes are easy and adaptable; feel free to make adjustments based on personal taste preferences. Feel free to play around with ingredients; you can make these healthy, homemade popsicles in almost any way you prefer! you can add fresh fruit or bits of chopped chocolate, substitute the water for either raw milk, non-dairy milks like coconut or almond milk, or even yogurt or kefir for a probiotic boost!

Strawberry Popsicles:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups frozen, organic strawberries
  • 3/4 – 1 cup of either water or coconut water
  • A drop or two of liquid stevia, or raw honey (optional) to taste

Method:

Blend ingredients in a blender (a high powered one like a Vitamix works great for this!)

Pour into popsicle molds, or ice cube trays for mini popsicles, and freeze for at least 4-5 hours, preferably overnight. If using an ice cube tray, make sure to use popsicle sticks!

 

popsicles 2Blueberry Banana “Ice Cream” Popsicles:

Ingredients:

  • 1 organic banana
  • 1 cup frozen organic blueberries
  • 3/4 cup coconut milk, almond milk, raw milk, or yogurt

Method: Blend in a blender; pour into popsicle molds and freeze! Feel free to make adjustments on proportions for desire consistency

 

cherriesChocolate Cherry Creamsicles:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups frozen organic cherries
  • 1/4 cup organic, raw cocoa powder
  • 1 cup coconut milk, raw milk, or yogurt

Method: Blend in a blender, pour into popsicle molds and freeze!

 

Other flavor ideas:

  • Cherry Vanilla Bean yogurt pops
  • Mango Coconut milk popsicles
  • Pina Colada popsicles (Coconut milk, lime, and pineapple)
  • Lemonade popsicles (fresh lemon juice from juiced lemons, water, and stevia or honey)
  • Peanut Butter Banana popsicles (Peanut butter, bananas, and water or nondairy milk)
  • Peach popsicles (frozen peaches and water)
  • Raspberry Kiwi popsicles
  • Chocolate Raspberry Creamsicles (cocoa powder, raspberries, and nondairy milk)
  • Orange Dreamsicles (freshly squeezed orange juice, coconut milk, vanilla)
  • Blueberry Acai Berry popsicles (frozen blueberries, acai berry powder, water)

Create your own combinations by mixing and matching various fruits, water, or non-dairy milks or even raw milk and yogurts to create flavorful, healthy popsicles the whole family will enjoy!
